Cottage rental in the heart of Finland
Cottage rentals at Salkolahti Holiday Cottages began in the 1990s, but the history of farm tourism at Anttila Farm, run by Mikko and Eija Salkolahti, dates back to the 1930s.
The Anttila farm has been in the same family since 1697. The last generational change on the farm took place in 2002, when the tenth owner couple, Mikko and Eija Salkolahti, took over the farm. The next generation is represented by Eija and Mikko's children Veera, Jenny, Katri and Eero, who are often seen in the yard of the house.
Salkolahti family started renting out holiday cottages in the 1990's, but the history of farm tourism on the farm dates back to the 1930s. At that time, the farm welcomed summer guests from Helsinki. They were served a sumptuous meal in the hall, while the household ate in the large dining room of the main building. The children had their own table in the cozy kitchen.
Summer camp activities and banquet tables for groups
In the 1950s, the farm served as a summer settlement, when the house was emptied of all furniture to prevent children from playing around. A summer settlement similar to today's summer camps could accommodate up to 70 children at a time, along with workers to look after them, so there was plenty of activity. The farm's own people and workers lived in various buildings on the farm and ate in a summer kitchen built in a barn.
From 1973 to 1987, the farm's owner Raija and Jyrki welcomed group diners at Anttila together with the previous host couple. In the first years, there were as many as 2,000 visitors to the generous banquet table during the summer.
Cottage rental as a service after farming
In the farmyard there is a large stone barn built in 1903. The barn housed cows until 1974. Pigs were also raised on the farm from the 1960s to 1999.
The farm's current production areas are forestry and cottage tourism. The lush meadows are suitable for grazing, and the farm's fields have been in active use in recent years: Hereford cattle roam the fields in the summer, migrating 40 kilometers away for the winter.
The farm has six holiday cottages, one of which is built for year-round use. In winter, it serves especially visitors to the nearby Himos ski and winter sports center. The owner also manages cottages owned by others.
In total, Salkolahti Holiday Cottages has eleven cottages for rent, from hidden cabins on an island without electricity to charming granny cottages, traditional family cottages and a high-class log villa. The cottages can be rented through the Nettimökki.fi service and Airbnb All cottages are located in the peaceful nature on the shores of Lake Niemijärvi and Lake Längelmävesi.
